Llacuna is a variant of "lago", lake. It comes from names of places

Am I right in thinking that the initial double L is indicative of a Catalan rather than a Castilian surname?

yes, normally names that start with a double 'l' are Catalan, but also Catalan and Basque surnames are to be found in Spanish colonies, so this must be one of them.
