In SpanishIn Spanish it literally means "jungle" or similiar dense tropical or subtropical forest... Sagani's explanation of the origin of it as a name definitely has a link to it... Likewise Andy's mention of such selvatic/silvan names... I'm surprised to find it linked with toponimics

In Italy there are at least three Municipalities called Selva:

SELVA DI CADORE (near Belluno - Noth/East)

SELVA DI PROGNO (near Verona - Venice region)

SELVA DI VAL GARDENA - near Bolzano - South Tyrol).

In the past the name SELVAGGIO was not so common in Italy.

Somewhere in regional italian dialects SELVA it is also the name of a cestnut wood.

Anyhow some Italian first name are linked to the idea of a "forest":

Silvio
Silvia
Silvano.
