Swiss (?) name ALLSPACH
There are a number of ALLSPACHs around in our town (in the south west of Germany) and they are said to have come from Switzerland 300 or 400 years ago. I can imagine the second part is from "Bach" (brook), but I can find only one Allsbach (and Allschbach), where I would have expected more.

I've seen other names where the Al(l)- means "old" ... and as for the rarity of the other spelling, sometimes one form or spelling of a name just survives due to migrations birth patterns, outside influences, etc. ...it's often a bit random ...

Yes, it all seems a matter of chance how a name will ramify and prosper, while another will simply fade away.

So it would be "old man river"? Andy ;—)
