I believe your surname comes from an old trade that is sometimes still used and that is of the fletcher, or the person who puts the feathers on the ends of arrows, but I could be wrong. :)

Dalrymple is a Scottish surname meaning "from the land of the steam"

The surname DALRYMPLE is treated in “A Dictionary of Surnames” by Mark Antony Lower, published 1988, page 81 (first published in 1860 as “A Dictionary of the Family Names of the United Kingdom”).

The author adds this comment : "This renowned family, which has probably produced more eminent men than any other in Scotland, was not ennobled until the XVII century . . ."

The author does not mention, for some reason, the choice of this noble surname for the fictional head of NBC-TV in the late television show "Seinfeld."
