Fernandes means „son of Fernando“
Fernando is a Romanic form of the Old German name Fridunand which means „peace + brave“

Fernandez is a Spanish patronymic name derived from the name Fernando, meaning: jurney, venture. I found this informatiaon in a surname book at the library.
