what does the surname Chapman mean?
I was very surprised that my surname was not listed here,as I thought "Chapman" is quite common.. I have always thought it means the proffesion of a salesman or simular..does anybody know??

CHAPMAN is defined on page 70 of “A Dictionary of British Surnames,” by P.H. Reaney, 2nd edition, published 1976 : it means "merchant, trader." The earliest example cited is Hugh Chapman, A.D. 1206.
