English, though a famous Hyde was Douglas, first president of the Irish Republic. He was, I believe, of English parentage. Being an Irish scholar he devised an Irish version of his name, Dughlas de hÍde, a name that had no history but which followed patterns of gaelicisation of English names.
The surname Hyde comes from the name of a town in Cheshire, Northern England. The original meaning was that the land rent was one(cow?)hide.
