My husband's grandfather's last name was LaVine. Another relative said the name was changed from Budwetski when they came to Iowa from Russia. The family is Jewish and I can understand a change of spelling upon reaching their "new home", either through a misunderstanding of the pronunciation or the inability to write it out, but the change is usually a derivation of the original surname.
I can't figure out how Budwetski became LaVine and can not find the origin or meaning of either of these surnames. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
