Origin of the name and what it derives from
If any one out there can help im researching Families with the name of Pickvance they seem to have been in and around Manchester and Lancashire areas that I know of from early 1800's could be even earlier, possibly a transcribed version could also be the name Pickavance would they be linked.

I'm sure this must be a version of Pickavance, which is best represented in South Lancashire. The spelling Pickvance must be very rare though. It comes from the French pique avant, meaning "prick forward", i.e., spur a horse on. I'm guessing it was a nickname for a person who was always in a hurry.
