A friend of mine would like to know about her last name, Westhoff. It is German.

It means "west garden". Hof means "garden", but often involves more, like a farm with an open space in the middle. Westerhof and Westerhoff and all its variants were the names of farms, from which the family took their surname. It is not only German, but Dutch as well.
