Archives"Yugoslavian" Surname Yokovich
Hello,
I am searching the surname "Yokovich". I am not confident on that spelling, I have simply written it as spelled. I am using this as one of the few peices of information I have to track down the ethnicity of the father of a young man born in 1989. All that was given was this surname and a similarily puzzling first name, that sounds like Yadrin. The young man's mother does not remember or will not reveal any more signifigant details, but as he is now legal, he wishes to uncover his roots. Please help our quest!

The right spelling is probably Jokovic (with an accent on the last "c").
If this spelling was kept in English, problems might arise.
First, the final "-ch" was chosen to be closer to the original pronunciation: it is really "-ich" as in "rich", not "-ik" as in "picnic".
Next, the initial sound should be pronounced as "Y" in "New York" and not as "J" in "New Jersey". If the latter ocurred, the family name could be confused with another more frequent "Yugoslavian" family name which is spelled "Gokovic" (with a special shape of "G").
