I'm searching for my fathers last name. no luck, he has past away so can't find any info on it. "GANELIN" I was told it was italian? not sure? can anyone help? ideas? greatly appreciated.

No it is russian I agree. In Italian the nearest surname could be GANELLI!

I think the surname Ganelin is a Russian name.

Yes, it is Russian, said to be from the forename Gavriil, English Gabriel. Other variants beginning Gan- are Ganichev, Ganin, Ganikhin, Ganyushkin.
