Re: Meaning of Zartuche?
in reply to a message by Ron Villarreal
I think it should be Sertucha, Zertucha, Sertutxa, Zertutxa, (these are some of the spellings found in Spain)and it is basque, from Gatica (Gatika) in Vizcaya (Bizkaia). It means a wood or copse made up by holly oaks (also known as holm or evergreen oaks). In other words it is equivalent to Hollywood. Fancy that! Also one Francisco de Sertucha Basaldua went from Spain to America in the beginning of the 18th century as captain of the dragoons of the presidio in Veracruz, Mexico.

I've been searching for so long to find our roots as well. I was told our last name was somehow changed from Zertuche to Zartuche, but we have no proof of that. I've looked and looked but I just don't know where else to look to find out. We've always believed our name came from Spain as well.
I'd love to know more if anyone can find anything else.
