I don't want to be a kill joy or a smart Alec but there are some blatant errors on this website. E.g Murgatroyd=Margarets Road, that's nonsense. Even a quick search on the net will offer up the real meaning= Moor Gate Royd. Royd been a Yorkshire dialect word meaning to be rid of stone and trees i.e a clearing or enclosure with a gate onto the moor beyond. Yorkshire, the county that is, is quite literally littered with Royds and Roads come to think of it. One more for reference: Ingham= Inga's homestead, nonsense again, ing is an OE word for a relative or someone who is dependant and does not pertain to any one individuals name in particular. Ing features heavily in English place names to this day and is commonly followed by ham and ton, sometimes ley and worth i.e Birmingham, Nottingham, Illingworth, Knottingley and Warrington to name but just a few. Are we supposed to believe that every second person was called Inga? I'm not saying they are all wrong, just advising to use this site to foster an interest in Etymology but take it with a pinch of salt and don't use for home work.
