The Origin of the Surname "Mitto"
I am trying to find out the origin of the surname "Mitto" I was told that "Mittoo" is from the same family tree, but due to a spelling error either an "O" was added or dropped from the surname.I was also told that the name could be ENGLISH, GERMAN or EAST INDIAN I am not sure. The only Mitto/Mittoo I have met resides Caribbean Region( Jamaica)and USA.

Tracey,
My great grandfather’s name is William Samuel Mittoo. He was born in Manchioneal, Portland in 1892. His father’s name is George Mittoo (I think he was born in India but not certain). I’ve had a difficult time finding anyone with the surname Mittoo. I assumed it may have been misspelled as so many names were back then.

Hello Darrell
Thank you for replying to my original post. My grandfather was from Westmoreland, Jamaica. Do you mind sharing were your grand father Mr. Charles H. Mittoo was born? I will definitely check with other family members to find out if there could be a family linkage. Thank you again for reaching out to me in my on going quest to understand my family origin.

Mitto may have a different origin but Mittoo is Indian. It is a male given name, I think it's a diminutive form. I don't know if it's a surname in India. A lot of Indians who migrated to the West Indies did not have hereditary surnames as such. So they often ended up with the name of a forebear (father?) as a surname. These names were not always known as surnames in the South Asian homeland.
Mittoo, also spelt Mittu and Mitu, may be a familiar form of a name such as Mithun, or possibly Mitra. The latter name is one of the names of the Sun god, Surya; it can also mean "friend". Mithun is said to mean union or couple (twin?).
