Fiant
Hi, I was hoping someone could tell me the meaning of the last name Fiant (and also if anyone has ever heard the name anywhere). It's pronounced to rhyme with "defiant". We believe it's a French/German name. It's my grandmother's maiden name, and we have not been able to find very much info about her family. Her family was from Indiana.
The only other place we were able to find this last name was in Colorado. The Eaton family, who built some of the ski towns like Vail, had a relative named Hannah Fitler Fiant.
Thanks!

Fiant is an alteration of the German name Fiand which was brought to the US in the mid 18th century as you can see at http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ddetling&id=I05575. Fiand is the Low German form of Feind 'enemy, adversary'. You'll find the distribution of Fiant in the US at http://tr.im/duh6 and of Fiand in Germany at http://www.verwandt.de/karten/absolut/fiand.html
