Surname - McCutcheon, MacCutcheon
I am seeking information on the name MacCutcheon or McCutcheon as it is written in both ways. Seeking a translation. Does anyone know what it means or stands for?I know closest words.. Mac of course is a family of, son of, etc.. and there are close approximations such as Escutcheon which is a tree surgeon.. but does anyone know more, have info? Thanks.

It means "son of Hutcheon", and so is the same as the English surname Hutchinson. Hutcheon is a diminutive of Hugh. There is a purely Gaelic form, MacUisdin.
It's Scottish in origin, though also found in Ireland.

hello...i have been told my whole life my family came from ireland and were 100% irish...unfortunately i dont know anyone from the "mccutcheon" side of the family including my father...ive been trying to find relatives and have been finding nothing but every irish website saying i from scottish decent...could it be possible my last name was just changed to mccutcheon to cover up irish roots when they came to the US?...please help..thanks
