I'm pretty sure it's Indian, but again, I haven't got a clue what it means.

No doubt this is another spelling of Shanmugam. This is a Tamil name from a forename which is an alternative name for the god Murugam, a favourite god of the Tamil people. The name is said to mean "one with six faces".
