I'm looking for information about the surname, Rote, which is not currently listed on this site. Most of the sources I've found online indicate that it is German in origin, although the largest number of immigrants to the United States with this surname came by way of Norway. In English, the German word
rote means "red," and most sources suggest that it originated as a nickname for someone with a ruddy complexion or red hair.
Since none of the etymological or historical sources I found were authoritative, I don't feel comfortable adding this name to the database, although I would very much like to see it included.
Thanks!
