I was writing a fiction set in medieval times where the pied piper of Hamelin is reinterpreted, on it part of the events involved the villagers of Hamelin etting a barrier and not caring about any other preventive action on the idea that the barrier was excellent and indestructible. I wanted to name the barrier type "Maginot" after the Maginot line for its symbolism, I thought Maginot was a place and would find the etymology easily but I found it was a surname... And cannot find its etymology... Even in this site which proposed scottish surnames starting with "mac" which has made me think that "maginot" might have started as "McInot" or some variant thereoff but that's pure speculation and says nothing of "maginot"'s meaning... Please could anyone answer what's "Maginot"'s meaning or highly probable meanings? My googling could at best produce a stupid site where they gave the title "Maginot" to description of the etymology and history of the surname "Dominguez" sintead, the brute that made that site did not realize the mismatch it seems... I would appreciate any help.
