Surname meaning. (Defee)
We've been trying to figure out the origin of our last name Defee. We had originally thought it was french, but upon meeting some recent tourists from France. They told us otherwise. Also we were wondering on the correct pronunciation of it. We say Duh-fee.Thanks!

Im related to DeFees...like you I thought French but the more ancestry research I do and the more census records I find I believe it could have been spelt, Diffi or difi..origins from Scottland. I have a DeFee cousin who doesnt have any French in her DNA test. I can trace the name back to the 1700s in South Carolina. Contact me if you need help

Defee is one of many variants including Diffee, Diffy, Deffee, Diffie which almost certainly come from the English name Diffey whose origin hasn't been determined (see http://www.ancestry.com/name-origin?surname=diffey).
