Re: Is Madrigal a real Spanish last name?
in reply to a message by Wish Fish
It is a relatively common habitational surname in Colombia and the rest of the Spanish-speaking world. It comes from a Late Latin term meaning "of the riverbed", literally "of the womb". It also coincides with a word in several languages referring to a type of song from Italy (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/madrigal), which comes from the same Latin word.
