I will also mention "kara" is probably from Russian dialectal карий (kariy) "brown, black" which comes from Turkic word. It is not used very often, modernly only in regions near Turkic people (e.g. in Tatarstan, or Russian spoken in Central Asia) or Turkic influenced regions (like my home region, in some parts of Donbass) as "poetic" type word or to describe person ("карие волосы" - dark brown hair, "карие глаза" - dark brown eyes) Word is on Wiktionary in 11 languages
