ArchivesAny body know what the name Hanes means?
All I know is that before the Hanes family came to america it was spelled Hawns or Haunes. I would like to know what it means cause it is my last name.

The word hanes (pronounced han-es) means "history" or "story" in Welsh, but this is probably entirely coincidental.

It looks like a version of Haines/Haynes, an English locative name meaning something like fences, but the earlier spellings suggest otherwise. Could it be from some German name, like Hannes or Hahn?
