I could be wrong, but I believe is comes from the original Gaelic name Shaughnessy. It would mean "son of Shaughnessy" and is definitely Irish, yeah. One site I found says that Shaughnessy means "elusive" but of course, that could be false information.
There is a site that I can definitely get the history/meaning for you, but it's down right now or something because my computer can't find it.
