Cholmondeley is a Cheshire place name. Basil Cottle, in the Penguin Dictionary of Surnames, explains it thus: 'wood/clearing of (an AS called ship(cf. keel)protector'. If you say so, Mr Cottle. AS stands for Anglo-Saxon.
