German Surname Göcking/Goeking Help

I'm trying to figure out the meaning of the Goeking surname, hopefully someone here will be able to help.

I know it's a German surname, alternate spellings are Göcking, Göking, Goeking, Goecking or Gocking. I haven't been able to find anything on it's meaning, if it refers to a place or a profession etc...

One thing I have found is an illustration from the late 1700s of Hessian mercenaries referring to Von Göcking (so maybe a place?). But that is all I have been able to find on the subject.

Anyone have any ideas??

Göcking does sound like a place name to me. It not seem to exsist any more, but there is Göckingen in the south west of Germany (an area called the Palatinate).

The name itself could well be connected to "Gockel" (rooster). If you wnat me I could try and find out more.

Sort of a long shot ..."gock" is a cock or male bird. Perhaps it comes from a "proud person". The variations can usually be explained by regional dialects.

I couldn't find anything else that was even close ...

Looking through a German dictionary I came accross the word Ing. It looks like it can be added at the end of another word. It indicates someone is an engineer.

So maybe Gock (male bird) ing (engineer) were combined. Hmm... an engineer of birds? Can Gock be used to refer to something else?

Ing is short for Ingenieur (engineer). It's not added.
