I have a friend with the first given name of Nocua. So far I have discovered it is actually a surname. I am curious as to the origin of the name and the meaning of the name. My hunch is that the name is Portuguese. How far did I miss the mark? I can be contacted at box4111 at yahoo.com

Il is probably a South American surname, see the Site www.familysearch.org. But in Ellis island appears a family coming from Italy. But the original place is not clear.
The meaning of this surname is unknown.

FamilySearch has most of the names coming from Columbia. I need to verify this, but I think Columbia was mostly settled by Portuguese. Maybe my first hunch was correct. I'll keep searching. Thanks for your help.
