I have tried many internet sites but cannot find the history of the surname CLEVENGER. Can any of you good people help me with a website that will give the history of this name for free. I believe it has English origins. Many thanks?

This is, without doubt, a version of the English surname, Clavinger, which means a "keeper of keys". Armed with this new spelling you may be more successful in searching the web.

I have to add something to the previous explanation. The Latin Claviger can also mean "club Bearer" (clavis = "key", clava = "club"). Reaney's dictionary gives both meanings, i.e., "keeper of keys" and "mace bearer", both ceremonial offices I suppose.
