Middendorf
I've heard a few versions of this : one, is that Middendorf (German) means
middle of the town. Others have told me middle of the village, and yet others say it means middle of the swamp. Do you know which of those are correct, if any? Thank you very much.

"Dorf" definetely means "village" in German, not "town" and not "swamp" either. The "midden"-part probably means (as you say) "middle of", but it could also refer to a village in the middle of whatever, maybe between two cities, in the middle of nowhere or maybe even of a swamp …

thank you Andy. That does make sense. I'll have to guess what it means and hope it means "between cities"--sounds nicer that the swamp theory. Cheers,
Claudia
