Meaning & History
This surname can derive from a location: Akame Forty-eight Waterfalls (near Nabari, Mie prefecture, Kansai region). Asides from being a popular hiking spot, the waterfalls are rumored to be the training location for ninja hundreds of years ago. Akame also derives from the Japanese kanji 赤目 (akame) which refers to the Japanese lates (Lates japonicus), a rare fish. The Kanji literally derive from 赤 (aka) meaning "red" and 目 (me) meaning "eye" and could mean "red or bloodshot eyes" referred to the red-eye effect in photography when there is the appearance of red pupils in color photographs of the eyes of humans and animals. It occurs when using a photographic flash that is very close to the camera lens (as with most compact cameras) in ambient low light.Other kanji combinations are also possible.
