Japanese: written 菊池 ‘chrysanthemum pond’ (also read Kikuike). It is found mostly in western Japan. Another version, substituting the character 地 ‘ground’ for ‘pond’ (both chi), is found in northeastern Japan and the island of Kyūshū. An ancient variant, 久々智 ‘Kukuchi of Higo’ (now Kumamoto prefecture), is listed in the Shinsen shōjiroku.
