Meaning & History

1 Polish (Królik): from a diminutive of Polish król ‘king’ ( see Krol ).

2 Polish: nickname from królik ‘rabbit’. This originated as an attempted calque on Low German dialect Kuniklīn ‘rabbit’, being misinterpreted as a diminutive of König, although in fact it is from the unrelated Latin word cuniculus.

3 Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): ornamental name from Russian and Yiddish krolik ‘rabbit’ (see 2 above).
