My Maiden name is Sokohl, we never new why it has the "H" in it. My dad's side of the family is supposedly from Kiev before it left the USSR. My father always considered himself Russian Jewish. I was able to find some Ellis Island records and some information going back to the region about a family who raised hunting falcons. But I thought the the other name variation and some information would be important.
I just thought that I’d add that this is also common among Slovakian Jews.
This is correct. Sokol is also a Slovak [noted -ed], Belarusian, Serbian (Rare), and Albanian (Rare) surname.Scripts: Сакол (Belarusian), Сокол (Serbian), סוקול (Hebrew), סאָקאָל (Yiddish)
