Sophomore

First recorded in prosaic use 1688, as a term for a second year at university, a variation of early *sophomer/*sophomor, from sophom (sophism) + agent suffix -er/-or, recorded as sophumer in 1653. Replaced sophister for a student advanced beyond the first year.
