Derived from Starheved (also spelled Stareved), which was in turn a form of Stairaird. Stairaird was a town in the parish of Dalry (Ayrshire, Scotland), in the neighbourhood of the hamlet of Stair. The town took its name from the farmstead of a family that first lived there, with the name itself probably meaning "high path over a bog" in Gaelic, derived from 'stair' "stepping stones, path over a bog" combined with 'àird' "high". Nowadays, the town is known as Stirie.Spelling variants of the Starrett surname include (some of them are extinct, others are still in use nowadays): Starhed, Starhede, Starrat, Starratt, Starett, Starret, Staritt and Starrit.
