Wernik

A diminutive surname created from the initial sound of a personal name, place or thing and diminutive ik suffix added to create a surname. The ik suffix may be commemorative also, meaning a significant event has occured regarding the person or family. The W can be the latin letter sound of V or W or even an O the W may also be Slavic letter sh, representing some type of S sound. The name may have been a way to polishize foreign names in the early multicultural Kingdom of Poland. In some instances the name derives from Werner or Wierny but the name may not longer resemble the original name unless you know what the scribe had in mind when creating the name.
