I have this surname. Romanizations of the character 周 are (in my opinion) heavily based on pronunciation, since it translates to the Chinese surnames "Chiau", "Chau", "Chao", "Chew", "Chow", "Chou", "Cho", "Chu", "Jhou", "Joe", "Jou", "Jue", or "Jow". In Korean, the closest equivalent in "Joo" or "Ju". In Vietnamese, the closest equivalent is "Châu" or "Chu". Oddly enough when I visited South Korea I didn't have the option to use the Chinese character, although I intend to for any future trips anywhere in Asia.
