Meaning & History

This Old English Surname was derived from a hill named after its resemblance to a teat or tead (mammary gland) of which Tidd is a variant. That name became a name for the locale and further by extension for its people.

Although never a large family name this humble surname is nonetheless well represented in history.

John Tidd, Samuel Tidd and Lt. William Tidd stood on Lexington Green against the Red Coats. As seen in historical reenactments, Lt. William Tidd shouted in defiance to the Red Coats order to lay down their arms, "You will not get my gun," which precipitated the shot heard round the world was fired. Admiral Kurt Walter Tidd is a United States Navy admiral. He is currently serving as the Commander, United States Southern Command. Prior to the current assignment, Admiral Tidd served as Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Rear Admiral Mark L. Tidd retired as the 25th Chief of Navy Chaplains on August 1, 2014.
