The surname Coit was first found in Carnarvonshire, a former country in Northwest Wales, anciently part of the Kingdom of Gwynedd, and currently is divided between the unitary authorities of Gwynedd and Conwy, where they held a family seat. The name lasted through many centuries of French and English courts causing the name to change through French and English variants.

Its origin however is very obscure. Believed to have changed through an Olde English pre 7th century personal name Coyt meaning "rounded," and one possibly used as a nickname, or it may have some sporting connection. The game of quoits involves throwing a ring of rope or iron over a peg, and this is one of the most ancient games known.
