It is one of several variants of the name Mauger, also spelt Moger and Major, which itself comes from the Old French Maugier and Old German Malger, a compound name meaning "council-spear". It probably came to England with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Mosher family history begins in 1250 when John Mauger was enrolled in the Fees of Somerset.
