Habitational name from Fawcett, Westmorland, or Facit, Lancashire, both derived from Old English fāh "multicoloured, variegated, colourful" and sīde "side, hill slope". In some cases it could instead derive from Forcett in North Yorkshire, which is composed of either Old English ford "ford, river crossing" and set "habitation, camp; stall, fold" or Old Norse fors "waterfall" and sætr "shieling, mountain pasture, residence".
