Meaning & History

From Turton, an historical area in Lancashire, England (now part of Greater Manchester); it was originally a township in the former civil parish of Bolton le Moors. It is derived from the Old Norse given name Þórr (see Thor) and Old English tun meaning "enclosure, yard, town". This was the birth surname of the musician Chad Kroeger (1974-), the lead vocalist of the Canadian rock band Nickleback.
