Meaning & History
Latinized form of De Groot. This name was used by the Dutch humanist, theologian and jurist Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), born as either Huig de Groot or Hugo de Groot. His writings laid the foundations for international law, such as two of his books: The Freedom of the Seas (1609) and On the Law of War and Peace (1625), for which he has been called the Father of International Law.
