Fitz seems basically Mac for people who like Fritz. I agree it's not too weird, but I don't feel like it's particularly interesting either. Also I associate it with illegitimate kids a bit.

Fitzgerald I like but am not in love with. Fitzwilliam sounds awkward. They both sound like crime detectives from an 80's action flick.

Fitzwilliam makes me think of Pride & Predjudice. Fitzwilliam Darcy was the love interest although nearly everyone called him Darcy probably because his first name was so unwieldy.

Unless it is used for the sons of William or Gerald or to honor the moms' family, they don't make sense.

Fitz is kinda cute. I love a nice Z in a name. It's eccentric, which gives it more personality than a lot of the surname names out there.

Fitzgerald would be interesting. It's the surname of an iconic artist who was born in my city, so you see things named after him here and there. I like the sounds in Fitzgerald, it's a beautiful emerald green sort of colour. Yeah, I like it.

I don't like either. Fitzwilliam reminds me of the Pride and Prejudice character, and if I was going to use a name from it, I would use Darcy. Fitzgerald reminds me of the Fitzgerald Inquiry. I don't like Fitz as a nickname or a name prefix (?).

I think I actually might dislike Fitz- surnames as first names more than Mc- ones. I find the sound unappealing and off putting, and do not think they sound at all natural as first names. I am okay with William, but I loathe Gerald and the 'fitz-' part makes it worse.
As a nickname, Fitz is okay, but not my favourite, and I may assume the nickname stemmed from the bearer's surname if a heard it.

I actually really like both names, especially Fitzwilliam because of Fitzwilliam Darcy. I think Fitz is really handsome, and I could see myself naming a son Fitzwilliam "Fitz" if I was going for a literary baby name aesthetic. I agree that Fitzwilliam and Fitzgerald would fit with the trendy/popular names right now, and I think they deserve a revival.

Personally, I don't really care for these names, but I can appreciate them. I agree that they could fit in with today's naming trends, while actually being an uncommon choice.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is the first person that would spring to mind and I’m sure that was his mother’s last name before marriage. I would assume the mother was a massive Pride and Prejudice fan followed by another oh another last name first name. Last name first name would be my only thought with Fitzgerald. I wouldn’t use either.

I've heard of guys with the last name FitzGerald/Fitzanything being called Fitz; one of JFK's grandfathers was Thomas Fitzgerald and was called Honey Fitz for his sweet-talking ways. (I.e., he was kind of oily.) I don't think they make good first names, too pompous and too faux-Irish; faux because real Irish people don't use those names as fns.
