etherington.....mystery name by elf |
You're right about it being a version of Hetherington, but it's not Welsh. Hetherington is a Cumbrian place name and surname, Etherington is, in my opinion, a Yorkshire version. The E- version appears in York in 1524. There was a Yorkshire landed family, the Etheringtons of Ebberston near Pickering, and another landed family, the Etheringtons of Driffield in East Yorkshire, which was a branch of Ebberston. You may be able to find them in genealogical works such as Burke's "Landed Gentry", or in histories of the areas mentioned.
