Meaning & History

Pronounciation: Rhymes with "pierce." Hard "g" (as in "goat").

Meaning unknown. From the Polish/German surname "Gerc;" possibly "Gerz," or "Gertz;" possibly related to Geertz (French/German, 7th century, from Gerard - "gari" (spear) and "hard" (brave).)

According to family folklore, the name emerged in WWII when two friends - both called Frank Gerc - signed-up with the British army. Because having a Germanic surname didn't look too great, they Anglicized the name by adding an "i."
