Meaning & History
Derived from the Middle High German word swenke which means "to swing". This was probably a hint at the gait of the person. Alternatively, it can also be derived from the given name Sweneke, a Low German form of the name SWANHILD. One last theory states that it is derived from the town of Schwenke (situated in Nordrhein-Westfalen).
