Entries in this site are set up in the following manner:

THE NAME where the name is used
The meaning and history of the name.

or something similar.

If the name is a form of another name (for example Smythe is a variant of Smith) then the meaning will listed at the other name. Follow the link provided to go to that other name.

You are welcome to place a link on your website that points directly to a name in the database. To do so, you use the following URL format:

  http://surnames.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=(name)

Where (name) is the name you would like to create a link to.

For example, if you wanted to link directly to the name Smith you would use the following URL:

  http://surnames.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=smith

And if you wanted to create a hypertext link in one of your pages to the name Smith you would use the following bit of HTML code:

  <A HREF="http://surnames.behindthename.com/php/search.php?terms=smith">Smith</A>

Which would look like this in your document:

  Smith

For those interested, someone has created an OpenSearch plugin for surnames.behindthename.com - supported by Firefox 2+, Internet Explorer 7+, etc.

Behind the Name does not collect information about visitors, except for (1) the email address that is used to create a login identity, and (2) the optional personal information that is entered into a user's login profile. The email addresses are kept completely private and will not be shared with third parties; the other personal information is optional and can be removed by logging in and then editing your account.
