[Opinions] Peregrine
Peregrine is a family name for me; there are a good 5-10 men in my recent family tree who were called Peregrine. I like the name a lot, and I like the nn Per, but I'm wondering your opinions. Do you think it would work on a RL child today? Do you associate it more with the Lord of the Rings, or with peregrine falcons? (Speaking of LoTR, I love the nn Pippin a LOT, but that's definitely too over the top).

I love Peregrine! I love Per! I love Danish names! I love The Lord of the Rings (Merry and Pippin the most)! I even somewhat like falcons..hehe. Oh, you could just call him Pip if Pippin is too over-the-top for you.
I think you get that I love it. As for working today, I think he could pull it off. It's not like he'd have the easiest name to learn to spell in kindergarten, but after all, you would nickname him Per for a reason. Per would go anytime. I love it!

Btw, I have a long time favourite character named Ryland Per and I never even noticed Per could be short for Peregrine.
Would you marry a goldfish? You know, if you were a goldfish?

I find Peregrine a bit feminine, to be honest (because of the -ine ending).
Pippin reminds me (as a non-LOTR-fan) of Pippin, father of Charles the Great/Charlemagne. We always had to laugh in our history class when that name came around, because it seemed so funny. I definitely wouldn't use it.

I did . . .
. . . think of both falcons and Pippin, in that order, as soon as I saw the name. It's a lovely name, but it could definitely have associations that are too strong and heavy right at the moment. It might be better as a middle name.

yes, don't forget...
While the hype from the films will probably have died down by then, there'll still be all the die-hard fans of the books who'll instantly associate Peregrine with Pippin. (Just tested this on my boyfriend- a complete LOTR obsessive- who said Peregrine Took instantly comes to mind when he hears 'Pippin').
That aside, I do like the name Peregrine

I'm not a "Lord of the Rings" fan, so for me the association is falcon, but that's not a bad thing, it's a strong masculine image.
